4th July - Northern Accent exhibition at the Smithy Heritage Centre
On Saturday the 4th of July, the Smithy Heritage Centre, in Kiln Lane Eccleston, is hosting the exciting ‘Once Upon a Time in the North, Tales with a Northern Accent’ exhibition on Saturday 4th July.
The exhibition is based on authors and stories with a Northwest affiliation, including the renowned author Lewis Carroll. The 4th July is the actual date that Lewis Carroll first read the tale of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland to Alice Liddell (the real life Alice). As a result the society is sending their very own Alice, 11 year old Charlotte Theis, to open the exhibition and to preside over the Mad Hatters Tea Party that will be thrown in her honour!
The event is kindly supported by The Daresbury Lewis Carroll Society and will see numerous characters from the tale at the Smithy, a free tea party with lots of jam tarts - of course!
Entrance is free and the event will take place from 1pm (when Alice will open the exhibition) and will finish at 4pm.

Featured Article - Carr Mill

On a sunny day, there is nothing more relaxing than a stroll around Carr Mill Dam. Walk or cycle around Carr Mill Dam and watch the birdlife, or just admire the views over billinge and the surrounding countryside. Carr Mill is an excellent venue for walkers, cyclists, joggers, anglers or photographers Powerboats on Carr Mill Dam
The Lancashire Powerboat Racing Club have their clubhouse on Carr Mill Dam and hold a series of powerboat racing events throughout the year.
Photographers will find excellent scenes to photograph and on race days will be able to photograph the powerboats.
The St Helens Angling Association also use Carr Mill Dam and hold regular match fishing competitions there.
The dam is at one end of the Sankey Valley country park, so a full day out could be enjoyed combining a visit to both and enjoying a rest for a meal break at the Waterside pub, the Ship inn near the Sankey Valley Ranger station, or the Carr Mill boathous cafe on a race day.
